Neurofeedback/Research

Q. I see references to; Neurofeedback, EEG Neurofeedback, EEG Biofeedback, NeuroTherapy and NeuroBiofeedback. What are the differences between these systems and terms?

A. All 'names' refer to the same process. Throughout our website, you will see that we most frequently use 'Neurofeedback' to define the training process which measures and feeds back the surface electrical data that comes from the brain.

Q. What is the difference between 'Biofeedback' and 'Neurofeedback'?

Answer »

A. Biofeedback and Neurofeedback are essentially the same. The difference is simply that Biofeedback measures and trains the peripheral nervous system i.e., muscle tension, blood flow, heart rate, blood pressure and skin conductance. Neurofeedback measures and trains the  central nervous system – the brain's electrical activity.

Q. My child can already pay attention for hours at a time playing video games. How will using the SmartBrain Technologies enhanced Video Game play help in more boring situations; like homework or school activities where he has problems paying attention?

A. It is true that many children who struggle with paying attention can easily focus on playing video games. The ability to focus on playing video games becomes a useful tool in video game based Neurofeedback training. Neurofeedback exercises and conditions the brain to improve its capabilities. Just like physical exercise improves overall health, Neurofeedback improves overall brain function. One must exercise regularly to enjoy the health benefits. Similarly, one must use Neurofeedback to enjoy its benefits. Video games make the training fun, immersive and interactive so training can take place more frequently and the benefits of the conditioning process can be realized.

If you decide that you want to run a 10k race, you first begin by jogging and then running longer and longer distances. As you run for longer periods of time you are building muscle strength, improving cardiovascular fitness and lung capacity. As you continue to run for longer distances, your body becomes better conditioned. These improvements allow you to run the 10k but you also recognize the benefits in day-to-day activities. Whether it is going for a leisurely walk, walking up a flight of steps or just participating in life, there are overall benefits of increased energy and vitality as a result of this increased physical conditioning.

Q. Why haven't I heard more about Neurofeedback and SmartBrain Technologies?

Although Neurofeedback has been practiced for many years the benefits and proof that it is an effective alternative form of therapy for many issues is only now becoming more widely understood outside the circle of Neurofeedback specialists. You may not of heard of Neurofeedback in general as the industry does not enjoy the kind of revenues and profits of the pharmaceutical drug companies.

Q. Is there any research being conducted now using the SmartBrain System?

Answer »

A. Yes. SmartBrain Technologies is the first and only Neurofeedback device to be researched through a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) research study. We are excited to announce that NIMH, (National Institute of Mental Health), has funded an ADHD research study, to be conducted by researcher; L. Eugene Arnold, M.D., M.Ed., Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, at Ohio State University using the SmartBrain Technology. This study is planned to begin in the fall of 2008.

SmartBrain Technologies also completed a research study which was funded through the National Center for Technology Innovations, a division of the U.S. Department of Education in 2007. As a result of this study, SmartBrain Technologies was awarded, "NCTI's Brightest Idea Award for 2007". NASA

Q. What does NASA have to do with video games and EEG Neurofeedback?

A. NASA scientists measured and trained pilot's attention and engagement to task in flight simulators using a sophisticated form of Neurofeedback. One of the scientists, Dr. Alan Pope, recognized that a flight simulator was very similar to a video game. Dr. Pope then came upon the exciting concept of using regular video games controlled by the player's brain activity and reasoned that this may be helpful to improve attention just like it helped the pilot's engagement to the flight deck.

Q. Is there any research to support that playing video games with this NASA technology actually helps?

Answer »

A. Yes. NASA conducted a research study at Eastern Virginia Medical School. In the study children with attention problems were provided the NASA based video game technology and another group of children received traditional EEG Neurofeedback. They found equivalent positive outcomes in both groups of children although they noted more robust changes in positive directions in actual brain activity in the video game group. Another independent study that has yet to be published was conducted by Roger deBeus, Ph.D. This study used a randomized double-blind crossover design. Children and their parents did not know when they were actually receiving the NASA based training and when they were just simply playing video games. The researchers found significant changes in brain activity, measures of attention and behavior when they actually received the NASA based EEG training.  Please review our 'Research section' for more details.

Q. Are there any other companies that sell NASA developed Neurofeedback?

A. NO. SmartBrain Technologies and its parent company CyberLearning Technology, LLC have the exclusive license with NASA to develop and market the video game Neurofeedback technology in applications of Health, Learning and Entertainment. SmartBrain Technologies and its parent company CyberLearning Technology, LLC are not affiliated with any other company claiming to use NASA technology and video games to improve attention.  Any company making such claims may be in violation of NASA's license. CyberLearning Technology, LLC has the exclusive rights to two specific NASA Patent Numbers~ 5,377,100 and 6,450,820.

Q. What is the SmartBrain Technologies Learning System?

A. The Learning System- is SmartBrain Technologies Neurofeedback system that is designed for home use. This system is pre-programmed with three training Programs, each designed for a specific, defined benefit;

Q.  In what ways can I use the Learning System?

A. SmartBrain Technologies was granted exclusive rights to develop and use NASA's video game Neurofeedback technology in the areas of Entertainment, Learning and Health. The SmartBrain Technologies Home System comes pre-programmed with five programs based on the original research conducted by NASA.

The pre-programmed programs are as follows:

Q. What is the difference between playing regular video games and video games with the SmartBrain Technologies Home System?

A. The SmartBrain Technologies Home System uses regular off-the-shelf video games that can be purchased in stores, i.e., the Sony PlayStation® Game Platform. While playing a game with the SmartBrain Technologies ™ Home System, sensors on the scalp measure attention levels and create a feedback loop that affects the way a game plays. It is a very sophisticated, interactive Mind-Machine interface that can actually train the brain and improve engagement to task just like with NASA's pilots. Video game play, without the addition of any form of feedback are simply a form of entertainment. Combined with Neurofeedback they can become a powerful way to exercise the Brain, and like other types of exercise the more we exercise, the more benefit we realize.

Q. With the DVD Media Player System, are there limitations to which DVD movies that can be watched when using the SmartBrain Technology?

Q. What are the benefits and limitations of the pre-programmed programs?

A. These pre-programmed programs are used to improve attention, concentration and focusing skills. They cannot be altered by the user at home. Neurofeedback can be an extremely complex process. There are literally hundreds of variations of training programs that involve different frequencies and site placements on the head. SmartBrain Technologies Network Providers are highly trained and experienced and have the ability to select and establish unique programming and site placements that are specific to a client's needs.

Q. What kind of games can I use with the SmartBrain Technologies Home Training Neurofeedback System?

A. The SmartBrain Technologies Home Training Neurofeedback System works with hundreds of off-the-shelf video games. We recommend the Sony PlayStation® consoles; Sony PlayStation®, Sony PlayStation One® and Sony PlayStation 2®. Sony PlayStation® has the largest library of video game titles of any of the console manufacturers. There are two types of games that work well with our system; racing games and jumping games. The criteria for using a game for training are that the 'X' button on the game controller needs to be actively and consistently used during game play. The effects of the 'X' button need to be objective and measurable within game play.

Racing games work wonderfully with our system. The 'X' button is like the accelerator on a car. It is consistently used during game play to make the car go faster and the effects of pressing the 'X' button are measurable and observable: the longer you press the faster you go.

Another game category that works well is what we call 'jumping' games. Jumping games are games like Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet and Clank. The 'X' button is used actively and consistently in game play. The 'X' controls the characters ability to jump like jumping up steps or across cliffs. The action of the 'X' button is objective and measurable defining how high or how far the character can jump.

Another important effect of game play is that the D-Pad control is used for direction control. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of games that meet these criteria and can be used for training purposes with the SBT system. Click here to view the ever growing video game list.

Q. What is the difference between SmartBrain Technologies and other Neurofeedback systems?

A. All Neurofeedback systems measure and create feedback of brainwave activity with a goal of exercising the brain. SmartBrain Technologies is the only company that uses patented NASA developed technology. SmartBrain Technologies is the only company that uses real off-the-shelf Sony PlayStation® and Microsoft Xbox® video games as Neurofeedback training screens.  The benefits derived from Neurofeedback are gained through 'exercising the brain'. Q. Can more than one person use the same SmartBrain Technology?

A. An unlimited number of individuals can use the SmartBrain system. The software that accompanies the SmartBrain Technology is designed to track data up to two users at any given time.

Q. What is the difference between the 'Video Game SmartBrain Technology' and the 'DVD Media Player SmartBrain Technology'?

A. There are some differences in the hardware components for each system. The video game system comes with a modified game controller and non-powered set of speakers whereas the DVD Media Player System includes a software package and security key. The remaining Neurofeedback technology and visor sensor system are identical for both systems. The video game technology connects directly with off-the-shelf Sony PlayStation® and Microsoft Xbox® video games for the Neurofeedback training.  The DVD Media Player technology is dependent upon the use of windows based computer for the viewing of a DVD movie or Windows Media File as feedback for Neurofeedback training.

Q. Are both the 'Video Game' and 'DVD Media Player' System equally as effective?

A. Yes. Since the hardware, and Neurofeedback training programs are identical, the outcomes from training are equally effective. The decision to use either or both is simply a matter of preference. Do you enjoy watching movies or playing video games?  HINT:  Most families choose the diversity of both technologies. (We even offer discounts when both are purchased together.)

Q. Can anyone use the SmartBrain Technology for general benefits?

A.Yes. Think of Neurofeedback as exercise for the brain. We all recognize the benefits of physical fitness and the need for regular exercise to maintain a level of physical fitness. Our brain is also an organ of the body that responds to regular exercise to maintain a level of vitality and capability. This is called neuro-plasticity- a type of 'use it or lose it' phenomenon. Sports players and high-performing Executives use the SmartBrain Technology for the purpose of 'Peak Performing'.

Network Provider

Q. What is the difference between the Learning System and using the SmartBrain Technologies System with a Network Provider?

A. The 'Hardware' provided with both the Learning System and the Network Provider system are identical. The difference is in the software that comes with each of the systems. If an individual has a diagnosed condition, the Network Provider is able to use the advanced Provider software to design training programs specific to the clients needs. The Learning System provides programs based on NASA's original research designed to improve attention focus and concentration, calm focus and peak performance. These Learning System programs can only be altered and changed by the Network Provider advanced software.

Q.  Are there any other differences between the Learning System and the system used by Network Providers?

A.  While both systems use video games as the training platform, systems used by Network Providers are fully configurable and have more powerful training capabilities. Network Providers are clinicians and can use their training, experience and clinical judgment to diagnose and treat clinical disorders.

If you think about a child contracting a bad cold, a parent has a number of choices.  She can do nothing and wait for it to run its course, go to their physician for a full checkup and receive a prescription for a medication to help with the symptoms, or use an available over the counter formula. The Doctor is able to choose a medication that is more powerful and more suited to the specific child's needs than may be chosen from an over the counter option.

Q.  Are there additional costs in seeking out the services of a Network Provider?

Answer »

A. YES, there are additional costs for services offered by a Network Provider. But, there are no additional hardware costs. The cost for an evaluation, office visits and ongoing oversight of Neurofeedback training will be charged by the Network Provider and paid directly to the Network Provider. Typically Neurofeedback has been provided in an in-office setting. Many times 40+ office visits are necessary to see improvements. SmartBrain Technologies is not involved in the relationship between our customer and the Network Provider. Please discuss these additional costs in detail with your Network Provider prior to establishing a relationship with him/her. The cost of the SmartBrain Technology is the same if you purchase it from our company or directly from the Network Provider.

With SmartBrain Technologies, the bulk of training is accomplished at home. Office visits with Network Providers are directed to diagnosis, establish a Neurofeedback training program and supervision and review the results of your home training. This minimizes the number of actual in-office visits significantly reducing the cost of therapy. Instead of all visits taking place in an office setting, hundreds of trainings can be conducted at home, improving outcomes, reducing costs and maximizing the overall benefit of training./p>

Q. Can my doctor who is not on your Network Provider list supervise my home training with the SmartBrain Technologies Home System?

A. NO. Only a SmartBrain Technologies Network Provider has the ability to reprogram the Home System and customize it for your unique needs. Our Network Providers have the ability to remotely view your home training sessions. Consulting with any other professional to supervise the SmartBrain Technologies Home Training is no different than purchasing the Learning System and using it on your own.

Q. Does my child need to stop taking medication to begin using the SmartBrain Technology?

A. NO. The benefits of SmartBrain Technologies can complement the improvements found with a regimen of medication. If you should choose to reduce or eliminate medication, it is important to consult with the prescribing doctor first. Research has established that Neurofeedback has the same core benefits as medication in the treatment of ADHD. Individuals with diagnosed medical conditions and on medications should work together with a SmartBrain Technologies Network Provider.

Q. If I purchase the Learning System and later decide to seek out the services of a Network Provider, what is the procedure?

A. If you have purchased the Learning System, you already own everything required in seeking the services of a Network Provider. A SmartBrain Technologies Network Provider has specialized software that can reprogram your Neurofeedback system with personalized training programs and can direct you with individualized site placements for training.  Contact the Network Provider in your area directly. Each Provider is independent and establishes his own fee schedule and training schedule.

Q. If I am going to work with a Network Provider to begin using the SmartBrain Technology, when and how do I buy the system?

A.  It is important that you first undergo an initial evaluation with the Network Provider before purchasing the SmartBrain System. The recommendation by the Provider is critical in making the determination that the SmartBrain System is appropriate for your clinical/medical needs. Once this determination has been made, check with your Provider to determine if he/she has an inventory of the SmartBrain Systems.
