The brilliance of the video game platform for neurofeedback training is the unlimited supply of training screens. Rather than programming a simple game or feedback display for training purposes, the SmartBox uses off-the-shelf commercial video games. As a result hundreds and hundreds of training screens are currently available with new ones appearing weekly.
While it is impossible to keep up with all of the new games on the market for compatibility with our video game neurofeedback system there are some general guideline.
The rule of thumb for games is twofold:
1)The digital buttons (the four buttons on the right hand side of the game controller and the flat directional pad on the left hand side are required for normal and consistent game play action and control. The analog joysticks cannot be used for normal game play i.e., controlling the direction of the game’s character or steering of a car or other normal action functions like jumping…
2)The feedback of the digital buttons needs to be consistent and obvious to the game player as the effects of EEG change the function of the action. For instance, in a race car game the X button is used for acceleration. The effects of EEG causes a noticeable change in the speed of the car. Loss of steering is encountered when the vibration continues for 4 seconds non-stop.
In a platform or ‘jumping’ game, the digital action buttons control the ability of a game character to jump or do a trick. When the jump button is pressed the ability to jump is controlled by meeting criteria in the EEG training (the character won’t be able to jump as high or as far and the ability to control the direction movement of the character will be impaired.
Both of these types of games work since there is a noticeable change or degrading of control based on changes in the EEG (feedback). They also work because the action is frequent through game play
The type of games that do not work are games that require the use of the analog joysticks for normal game play functions and games that do not provide noticeable changes in feedback.
For instance, a first person shooting game where the character is firing a weapon as the major action in the game. Even though the X button may fire the weapon there is not sufficient feedback in how fast or how far the bullet travels to be useful feedback.
